Philosophy
Atwood Architecture is a collaborative, process-driven design practice dedicated to creating meaningful architecture. Each project is approached as a rigorous analytical and creative process where design is shaped into a compelling story rooted in its site, context, program, and the people it serves. Every project is guided by clear objectives, close collaboration with clients, and a belief that design has the power to strengthen communities and enrich everyday life.
Alex Atwood is an architectural designer with more than fifteen years of experience across civic, mixed-use, healthcare, commercial, hospitality, residential, and urban design projects. His work balances conceptual clarity, technical rigor, and thoughtful execution, with a focus on design that is purposeful, contextual, and connected to the people and places it serves.
Alex earned a Bachelor of Design from the University of Florida in 2009, where he developed a foundation in urban design, contextual thinking, and architectural representation. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Architrave, received the James McLean Scholarship for architectural excellence, and graduated with the Design Honor Award.
He earned a Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2012 after admission with advanced placement. MIT’s interdisciplinary curriculum broadened his approach to architecture at the urban and systemic scale, and he received the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Certificate of Merit upon graduation.
During graduate school, Alex interned within the Healthcare Studio at Reynolds, Smith & Hills (RS&H), gaining experience on technically complex projects balancing design excellence and functional performance.
He later joined Elkus Manfredi Architects in Boston, contributing to large-scale mixed-use and urban placemaking developments. His work included the 265,000-square-foot New Balance Warrior Ice Arena, a mixed-use project combining the Boston Bruins’ practice facility with retail and office space.
At ASD|SKY Tampa Bay Studio, Alex worked in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment with architects, interior designers, landscape architects, and graphic/signage designer. His work emphasized user experience, sustainability, and civic engagement, including Horizon West Bay, the City of Largo’s LEED Gold City Hall with office space, retail, a public plaza, and a four-story collaborative atrium known as The Green Corridor.
Through Atwood Architecture, Alex continues to pursue purposeful, timeless design rooted in context, craft, and community.
